How to Create a Sketched Sea Creatures Pattern in Procreate

Do you know that feeling of filling in outlines with a pencil? For me there's something incredibly soothing about it, almost like a form of art therapy. So today, I’m happy to share my process of creating a cute sea creatures pattern using stunning pencil brushes and a half-brick repeat in Procreate.

The sketched motifs give a charming, playful look to the designs, and I feel that these kind of pattern are a perfect fit for kids’ and baby products.

Here’s a sneak peek of what you'll learn in the class:

Step-by-Step Mini Tutorial:

Step 1: Make a new Canvas

  • Open Procreate and set your canvas size. For this pattern I use 4000px in width and 3000 px in height. I use the Rectangular Half-Brick Template which is included for all students of the class. This template has pre-made settings which will allow you to easily create the half-brick pattern tile.

Step 2: Sketch the motifs

  • Sketch the basic shapes of various sea creatures with the Hard Pencil brush (which is included for all students of the class.)

Step 3: Draw the motifs

  • Draw and fill in the motifs with the Smooth Pencil brush (which is included for all students of the class.)

Step 4: Create the pattern

  • Arrange your motifs so that the pattern look balanced.

  • Finally it’s time to make the pattern. When using the Rectangular Half-Brick Template, flip the edges to the center and re-arrange your motifs so that the pattern is balanced. P.S. video instructions are included in detail in the class called Sea Life Pattern.

Step 6: Test the Pattern:

  • Copy you canvas + paste it so that you’ll get a flattened image of your pattern tile.

  • Test your pattern tile in my free Pattern Tester here on my website.

P.S. This mini tutorial gives you a taste of the full class, where we'll dive deeper into each step and explore more advanced techniques.
