Discover the Pros and Cons of Vector and Raster Patterns

Ready to explore the world of pattern design? Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, designing patterns is a creative and fun process. There are a few different ways of creating patterns, and one question that I constantly get is “Should I create vector or raster patterns?” So in this blog post, I'm going to go through the differences between vector and raster, and why you might want to choose one over the other.

Vector patterns are made out of mathematical equations and points, which makes them excellent for designs requiring crisp lines and accurate forms, such as logos and graphic design elements. Vector patterns provide you total control over your design, and because it's made out of vectors you can scale up your patterns to the infinity without loosing resolution.

Raster patterns on the other hand, are created using pixels, which allow you to draw anything you wish without the restrictions of vector points. With raster you can add yummy textures, allowing you to really explore different techniques, brushes, and styles. As raster patterns are made out of pixels, you won't be able to scale them up so much without loosing resolution. However, with the right tools and techniques, you can create amazing looking, and high quality patterns.

That's where Procreate comes in! Procreate is a digital illustration app designed specifically for the iPad, and it's the perfect tool for creating raster patterns. With Procreate's intuitive brushes and tools, you can easily create beautiful textured patterns that will be truly unique.
